About this colour
Vandyke Brown is a rich, deep brown with a warm, dark intensity - named after the Flemish master Sir Anthony van Dyck, who used a version of this colour extensively in his renowned portraits and figure studies. It is one of the most historically significant earth browns in fine art.
Modern formulations use lightfast pigments to replicate the depth and warmth of the original without its permanence limitations. Watercolour tubes contain more glycerine binder than pans, giving the paint a soft, creamy texture that mixes instantly with water. A small amount from the tube goes a very long way - making tubes ideal for large washes and expressive, generous brushwork.
Leave it to dry - reactivate anytime
Squeeze out what you need and leave the rest on your palette. When the paint dries, simply mist with a little water and it reactivates fully - as workable as when it was first squeezed. No cleaning needed between sessions, and nothing is ever wasted.
