About this colour
Raw Umber is one of the most ancient and versatile earth pigments available to watercolourists - a deep, cool brown with subtle green undertones that has been a staple of artists' palettes since the Renaissance. It is made from natural iron and manganese oxide, giving it a genuine organic character.
Raw Umber tones down brighter colours without muddying them, enriches blues and purples, and creates an unlimited range of natural greens when mixed with blues. It is indispensable for landscapes, architectural studies, wildlife, and underpainting.
The semi-transparent body and gentle granulation bring subtle texture and depth to washes - particularly effective on cold-press and rough paper. Suitable for professional artists and beginners alike.

Creamy, soft consistency
Higher glycerine binder than pans and therefore have buttery soft texture that disperses effortlessly in water.
Supreme lightfastness
Highly lightfast pigments rated Excellent which means your artwork stays brilliant for decades.
Perfect for large areas
A tiny squeeze goes a long way. Ideal for smooth, even washes across large sections of a painting.
Why choose tubes?
Watercolour tubes contain more glycerine binder than pans, giving the paint a soft, creamy texture that mixes instantly with water. A small amount from the tube goes a very long way - making tubes ideal for large washes and expressive, generous brushwork.
Leave it to dry - reactivate anytime
Squeeze out what you need and leave the rest on your palette. When the paint dries, simply mist with a little water and it reactivates fully - as workable as when it was first squeezed. No cleaning needed between sessions, and nothing is ever wasted.
Refill your pans
Use tubes to top up empty half- or full-pans in your travel or studio palette. Squeeze into the pan, let the paint cure for a few days, and you have freshly loaded pans ready for use - far more economical than buying replacement pans.
Rich Earthy Pastels with White
Mix Raw Umber with White to unlock a range of warm, earthy pastel tints - from soft beige to pale warm taupe. It yields muted sandy and warm mushroom tones that are perfect for portrait work, earthy landscapes, and natural shadow studies
