About this colour
Davy's Grey is a soft, muted grey with a distinctive greenish undertone - a colour with genuine art-historical character. Developed originally for 19th-century English watercolourist Henry Davy, it remains one of the most refined greys in the watercolour palette.
Unlike the stark neutrality of Payne's Grey or the coldness of Ivory Black, Davy's Grey carries a subtle warmth and organic quality that makes it ideal for atmospheric skies, misty landscapes, and naturalistic shadows. It tones down brighter colours beautifully without the harshness of a pure black.
Suitable for professional artists and beginners alike. The semi-transparent character allows it to layer subtly, and its soft greenish cast makes it a favourite for botanical work, urban scenes, and understated, harmonious palettes.
Product features
Highly pigmented & vibrant

Endless colour possibilities
Intermixes beautifully across warm and cool ranges alike - shifting from slate and sage when paired with blues and greens, to soft khaki and stone when touched by earthy ochres and siennas.
Semi-opaque character
One of the rare semi-opaque greys in watercolour - lay quiet mists over vivid washes, cool a warm sky, or subdue without muddying. It softens and unifies without disappearing.
Non-toxic formula
Made with non-toxic additives and safe for all ages and working environments.
Artist grade quality
Professional-grade transparency and vibrancy, perfect for professional artists and beginners exploring the medium.
Creamy, soft consistency

Supreme lightfastness
Highly lightfast pigments rated Excellent which means your artwork stays brilliant for decades.
Perfect for large areas
A tiny squeeze goes a long way. Ideal for smooth, even washes across large sections of a painting.
Why choose tubes?
Watercolour tubes contain more glycerine binder than pans, giving the paint a soft, creamy texture that mixes instantly with water. A small amount from the tube goes a very long way - making tubes ideal for large washes and expressive, generous brushwork.
Leave it to dry - reactivate anytime
Squeeze out what you need and leave the rest on your palette. When the paint dries, simply mist with a little water and it reactivates fully - as workable as when it was first squeezed. No cleaning needed between sessions, and nothing is ever wasted.
Refill your pans
Use tubes to top up empty half- or full-pans in your travel or studio palette. Squeeze into the pan, let the paint cure for a few days, and you have freshly loaded pans ready for use - far more economical than buying replacement pans.
Davy's Grey with White
Mix Davy's Grey with White to create soft, muted grey tints with a cool, understated elegance. A small amount of white gently lightens this neutral grey, making it perfect for misty skies, subtle background tones, and delicate shadow work in portraits and landscapes.
