About this colour
Crimson Lake is a brilliant, cool, transparent red with a distinctly violet or blue bias - the essential cool red for any watercolour palette. It is one of the most luminous, clear, and versatile reds available in watercolour.
Its blue bias makes it the perfect complement to Scarlet Lake's warmth: together they cover the entire red spectrum. Crimson Lake is the red for pink roses, magenta florals, cooler portrait flesh shadows, and the richest mixed purples. Combined with Prussian Blue it creates jewel-like violet-purples of extraordinary clarity; combined with Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna it yields rich, warm portrait flesh tones.
One of the most important colours on any palette - the cool red that unlocks clean purples and pinks that simply cannot be mixed from warmer reds.

Why choose tubes?
Watercolour tubes contain more glycerine binder than pans, giving the paint a soft, creamy texture that mixes instantly with water. A small amount from the tube goes a very long way - making tubes ideal for large washes and expressive, generous brushwork.
Leave it to dry - reactivate anytime
Squeeze out what you need and leave the rest on your palette. When the paint dries, simply mist with a little water and it reactivates fully - as workable as when it was first squeezed. No cleaning needed between sessions, and nothing is ever wasted.
Refill your pans
Use tubes to top up empty half- or full-pans in your travel or studio palette. Squeeze into the pan, let the paint cure for a few days, and you have freshly loaded pans ready for use - far more economical than buying replacement pans.
